New charges for animal-origin imports into the UK: what to expect from April 2025

Progetto senza titolo (75)

With the start of the new fiscal year in the UK, important changes are coming for importers of animal-origin food products.
UK authorities have announced updates that will directly impact the cost and management of sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) inspections at the border.

Here’s what’s changing, why it matters, and how to stay ahead of it.

What’s changing?

Starting in April 2025, local Port Health Authorities will introduce updated charges for:

  • Documentary checks
  • Physical inspections of consignments

Additionally, the DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) is reviewing the structure of the Common User Charge (CUC), with a new rate expected by 30 April 2025.

📌 These charges apply to animal-origin imports from the EU, such as cheese, meat, fish, and processed animal products.

Why are SPS inspections necessary?

Sanitary and phytosanitary controls play a key role in safeguarding the UK’s food system. They aim to:

  • Prevent the spread of diseases like Foot-and-Mouth or African Swine Fever
  • Protect consumers from contaminated or unsafe products
  • Defend the UK’s farming and food production sectors

How will the additional funds be used?

According to official sources, the updated charges will support:

  • Enhanced inspection infrastructure and staffing
  • Improved food safety and biosecurity
  • Fair competition among businesses that comply with regulations
